Asset Library, Dont save duplicate assets when saving file iterations

I have pose assets in my rig file. As I continue working on it, I save numbered iterations of that file in a subfolder, because the assets get saved in every iteration, I end up with many duplicates of the pose assets in the library. Maybe an option to "Don't save Assets" under "Save As" would help, it could be on by default but you could turn it off and only add assets manually from your master file to keep the library clear of duplicates.

I hear you, bro! blender.community/c/rightclickselect/k795 #15

I too version files and have a problem with Blender's Asset Manager listing every version in the Asset Manager which crowds the asset window with old versions you need to keep around but seldom want to select.

I solved this by having a permalib (permanent library) directory and symbolically linking a versionless name of the file, and using the Asset Manager only on the permalib directory. (The versioned files are stored in another directory). (If interested, I can release the script which does this. It works well, but does require re-running the script whenever you add new versions.)

But a better in-Blender behavior would be for it to only use the latest version number. So if there are files 'fubar v1.blender', 'fubar v2.blend', 'fubar v3.blend' (with the same named assets), it only lists the 'fubar v3.blend' assets in the Asset Library Window.

For the record: Why we need versioning: If you're doing a large production, your rigs will change over time as you refine them. Often animations for earlier scenes will only work with a specific version rig. But when you create a new scene, you almost always want to use the latest version. Also, easy to break things when editing .blend files, so you need more than just a single backup.

TLDR: Suggestion to make Blender's Asset Manager compatible with Blender's own File -> Save Incremental menu!

The current workflow as it stands it just to remember to set Outliner display mode to 'Blender File' and then clear any assets from there in your OLD files. So it's easy enough, but again, a simple check box in the Save menu to not export the assets form that file would make life easier. And if you wanted those assets after all, just resave the file with that box unchecked.

Create an "old" folder and move your old file-versions into it, the thing you propose is way to complicated and error prone.

the "Old" folder would have to exist outside of the Library Path. Meaning one would have to create an "old" folder structure that mirrors the active directory structure that is outside of the librarys path, this would create unreasonable file management overhead considering the goal is simply to avoid duplicate library assets. Unless I am missing something ?

Sadly you are right, didn't saw that subfolders are included in the Library. We need one or both of following options:

  1. exclude subfolders setting per library, not globally
  2. Libraries should only use the newer asset if two equal named are found. Alternatively only use the newest numbered file-version.
