Mapping as modifiers

Imagine having at least planar, cubic, cylindrical and spherical mapping available as a modifier. Why? Because this way you quickly could put locally mapping under other deform modifiers or apply it into the UV, something that mapping positioned by object can't do. It's also a pain to tie a material by specific object related mappings instead of keeping it universal. Besides the workflow for many objects is much easier that way, 3dsmax does it with modifiers and unwrapping becomes unnecessary for many environmental or architectureal assets.

I'm maybe wrong or misunderstanding but there is already a modifier that allows you to do UV projections. It's called UV Project, and you can add objects as projectors. There is also the UV Warp. Never used them but they are here. docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/modeling/modifiers/modify/uv_warp.html docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/modeling/modifiers/modify/uv_project.html

* @Darknoodles * Ahh... interesting. I've not used that before.

* @Darknoodles * yes but they only know planar (-Z of helper objects) and are a pain to use

Yes! A UV Mapping Modifier that lets you adjusting via an empty/etc would be awesome.
