Snapping SPECIFIC vertex to target in object mode

For example, suppose you have a bottle made up of 2 objects, body and lid . Image

Currently, it's nearly impossible to precisely snap(insert) the lid on the top of the body with snapping in object mode . Well we can set snapping options to Vertex / Closest , but what this does is to just take any vertex that are close enough to the target object and use it for snapping, which is not we want. We want to use a specific vertex.

You have to go into edit mode and set the snapping options to Vertex / Active and select all vertices you want to move with one specific active vertex . Image Image Image

However, doing this in edit mode ignores the object origin .

Snapping specific vertex to target. We need to be able to do this in object mode, not just in edit mode. There might be 2 solutions for this:

  • Adding an Active element option for snapping

  • Adding a Select element to be snapped(Reference vertex) option to the move(G) tool

Imagine having 2 instances of a mesh and wanting to snap them from one vert to the other without changing origin. In Max you simply hover over a certain vert and then drag it to the vert of the other instance.

In Blender the only option i see is in edit mode.. which will screw up all the other instances position. Any other solution seems strange (Like parent something to the vert and move it to respected position)

And no a 3D cursor solution for a click here and drag there is not QoL

Use the 3D cursor.

  1. In edit mode: make a selection then press shift+s, 2 .
  2. In object mode: make sure your "transform pivot point" is set to "3d cursor". The shortcut key is the period next to the question mark (not the numpad).
  3. Your object will now snap to things based on where that 3D cursor is.

A lot of the time a circle is an edge loop. Press alt+leftClick to select edge loops.

Just curious if there is any way to do this now? I'm able to get "closest" snap to vertex to work sometimes , but I keep running into cases where no matter how close I get the desired vertex on the first object to the desired one on the second, snapping will actually move them farther away... (it doesn't actually snap any vertex to the vertex that is highlighted/circled which seems wrong).

It would be really great if there was an easy way to do this. This suggestion would work, or even just selected the closest vertex from the mouse cursor when the grab/move operation begins would make it even easier.

Blnder could also add couple more snapping targets: snapping to circle centers, center of area of face (or edgeloop), axis of round symmetric object and concentricity

I agree. I recommended Blender to my friend and when he first used it, he said snapping was the weakest point of Blender.

This case is solved so easily in Sketchup !

When you move an object, you firts click on a reference point (a vertex, the middle of a vertice, or whatever) then you specify a target point. The translation correspond to the vector defined by those two points.

@pcsd24: A similar behaviour also works with rotation and scale...

Yes, I have been using SketchUp for quite a long time and it was so convinient. Wish Blender could do that as well.
