Switch layer object system for Grease Pencil, Cutout 2d and Lego Movie style 3d animation

They have things like this in other 2d programs I've used; ToonBoom and Moho. Basically you load in drawings (with no BG) of Mouth shapes (Phonemes, smiling, angry etc.), eyes with movement (Open, blinking, looking up, etc), and hands with different gestures. You then you parent them to the head and the arms etc.

Once loaded you just move the slider and make keyframes of the drawings you want in the Dopesheet.

How to load the images? I know Moho allows you to import PSD files with the drawings on separate layers you want to switch in a folder. It would be really neat if there was a way to allow users to draw the different drawings with grease pencil and then load them in this switch layer system. This would be great once the asset manager comes online.

Right now my work around is making the different images on separate frames then using the Time Offset Modifier. It's OK but kind of limited. I also tried UV selection way with a plane. It's a lot of work to set up.

you CAN create sliders to work in Grease pencil, using GREASE pencil. Check this: imgur.com/0GeWyjn

* @3dcinetv * This is kind of hacky, a real way to do this within the interface would be smoother for users. 2D is less relying on technical rigging, this is essential to its accessibility.

A great example of how to do that already with modifiers

In terms of UI, both Flash and toonboom have moved away from the slider mechanic into a system where all available drawings are visible and I think this is a better way to go.

For example: youtube.com/watch

* @m.chaptel * Yeah it is nice to see what you're working with and have more spread out a picker. For this I was thinking that a small form factor would be good so it'd stay out of the way.

I think grease pencil is great tool and it looks to be good tool for face rigs and animations. I am just wondering could it be made even further - for generating realtime textures which could be projected in realtime for 3d meshes/surfaces but edited in 2d texture / uv editor window with rig features. Something like they did with softimage in lego movie: youtu.be/xP3LP4Bt-NA
