Hover(or Smart, or Fast) Selection mode

The way we usually interact with blender:

  1. Hover your mouse cursor
  2. Select an object/element/bone/etc.
  3. Applying operation of Move/Rotate/Scale/etc.

The way I see it could be:

  1. Hover your mouse cursor
  2. Applying operation of Move/Rotate/Scale/etc.

What we already have that is close to this speed of interaction is Tweak tool (W cycle shortcut)

Pros of Tweak tool: You just click and drag your mouse to tweak position of an object/element/bone/etc.

Cons of Tweak tool: You cannot tweak rotation with it (at least yet. I think it could be possible to add modifier key support so if you Shift+Click and drag = you rotate, Ctrl+ Click and drag = you scale, but it doesn't seem to fit blender's consistent design)

The way I think it could work is adding "Hover(or Smart, or Fast) Select" checkbox in selection tools menu. After that whenever you hover something in your scene, it would be highlighted and you just press G/R/S or whatever operation you need.

Pros of this method: Personally I see this method useful for animators, when you have to fast pose a character, traditional hover-select-transform workflow feels quite slow.

Cons: Hover highlighting objects in complex scenes with tons of object or in edit mode of an object with high dense topology can be stressful for your system. You cant multiselect and edit objects/elements/bones/etc using this method because everytime you hover your cursor on different object, selection updates.

Conclusion As I said above, I see how this method would be useful for animators, but maybe you will find your way of using it. For instance in vertex edit mode, with soft selection turned on you could just hover the mouse cursor on needed vertex and move it with its neighbors just pressing G. Hover on a face and press E to extrude. In object mode, to fast place/rotate/scale scene objects just by hovering and using G/R/S. It's milliseconds you save per hour, seconds per day, minutes per month.

Happy blending)

Tweak is firt to TURN OFF SHIT added in his " bring industry standards " run...

It cause random unwanted micro transforms all the time while selecting. Same as in Max it need to switch to Selection mode all the time because selecting in Move or other mode may do unwanted micro transforms you don't even notice.... Only then, after hours of work, you find that one of your models moved for 2cm and you snap all this time wrong.

First select exactly what needed -> then edit exactly how needed = the only way to not generate crap while work.
