Linked-duplicates detect faster
With "alt D" I can create an instance, but I don't see anywhere that this is one at once , except possibly "Object Data Properties" Therefore my suggestion would be to highlight them a bit more so that they are recognized as those. To recognize Linked/Instance objects, without knowing that they are in the scene, it would be helpful if they are marked with an "L" in the outliner like in this example. Maybe white as master and orange as clone.

* @IIIFGIII * this is something what I thinking too developer.blender.org/T86052 But your idea is not full, coz "Adapting" UX. Problem is whit Pure Linked, and Depth Linked and Join as some Hierarchy. In my opinion Join need hierarchy in outline.
To be more clear, we need some "abstract class" as instance of objects where we can agregate objects like cube, cylinder, etc.. or just simple poly/lines.
Collection is something like "abstract class" but we not see hierarchy and relations, the icon with "L" not talking us what with what and where..
HVR the counter next to object as how many is linked is good idea in outliner, and in case of edit can tell about some risk if want edit
* @ManBlender * Joined and parent object must be under some abstract class
* @IIIFGIII * there are 2 cases. Duplicated linked, and linked as external files/colection.
Actally a chain symbol is more helpful
I just want to quickly see if something is related to another object, I have after 2 days rigging already difficulties to find my way in my own Scene, And to edit a scene from another person it would be very helpful to see such hints quickly. here again an example how it goes quite simply, (another positive example for a SchematicView in Blender by the way)

* @wvolbers * God I miss this so very very much.
* @Andres Stephens - Trinumedia * haha, i'm still in the happy position of saying, that I can work with Softimage
In relation to this problems of hierarchy is "Animation". In my opinoin "Animation" should have this same "Abstract Class" as "virtual object/instance" with own time line and cordinated by global time line. Something like Adobe Animation/Macromedia have. Any object have own time line, and can be controled by scripts. This same can be in blender, then hierarchy of all object and animation can be more clear.
There is other related issue that can be solved, the external files blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Kghbbc/ Can be letter "E" as External Linked. But is hudge step and expectation imho.
