viewport wireframe update

I (as modeler) can see no use in current wireframe mode for the viewport (example 1 and 2). For me more useful example 3 and 4

Just to be clear (since it's already been pointed out that it's possible to get the results you want), are you proposing a change in default behavior, or removal of existing features?

So drag slider and get it, save startup file with such tune. {attachment 7981347jpg}

Or do you mean subsurf-optimized lowpoly grid? {attachment 7994749jpg}

* @ Vyacheslav * Actually, I was waiting for a comment like this. This is a feature of a certain part of Blender community - without thinking about what was written to suggest a solution to a completely different problem))

First - Is there any benefit for you in this viewport behavior? Do you really need partially shown mesh? In what cases is it necessary?

Second - how often do you need to see the grid of the subdivided model? With millions of polygons. (your suggestion to make wireframe = 100%)

Third - about subsurf-optimized. As you may have noticed, I am aware of this possibility, since that is what I used to take a screenshot for example. But what if I need to see a grid (real grid, not subdivided) of all smoothed objects, and not just selected ones? Should I select all objects in the scene?

My suggestion is to replace the useless and strangely working mode with something more useful (in my opinion). It is not a question of how to achieve the same result using other methods. This proposal is specifically about wireframe mode.

* @verderblich * Your thrird point is called Isoparms in Cinema 4D, iIn Blender 2.8 it would be great to have it as a more overlay. I suggest too an option to change the wireframe opacity

* @verderblich * May be I did not understand your proposal well.

  1. No, I never use partial wireframe, but it can be used for mesh analizing (it shows density and pinching of grid better). So let it be.
  2. Agree, for dense model I don`t need, but I use simplify for viewport, so I am working with not so dense grids.
  3. You can click «optimized» with alt for all objects, you want to see with simplified grid. But I think, you know it.

So let`s think, how you proposal should work, to show «nice and not too dence grid for all». The only way i can imagine: caching one of the subdivisions that corresponds to parameters like: «median size of edge is not higher than 1/20 of max dimention» and/or «minimal angle already less than X» Additional memory consuming for beautifying. So only as option.

What algorythm do you suggest? My be just show optimized for all?

* @Salvador Garcia * Agree. More overlays - better

* @ Vyacheslav * What's your point? Is the current behavior better than what I suggested? Then just say so.

If I haven't clearly stated what I would like to see, then you can look at Maya, Softimage, Modo, 3dsMax, Zbrush or others. (and yes, I know that the sentence "let's do it like in another software" is a trigger for another part of the community)))

This is not technical documentation with a technical description. This is just a suggestion. I do not know what algorithms should be involved and how much memory will be needed.

* @verderblich * I am asking not about something complex. But ask you to describe in human language, how program should deside, what subdivision is more beautiful for you. Are you okay with optimal view of subdiv?

* @ Vyacheslav * I gave an example in the screenshot. The behavior of the viewport in Maya or Softimage (or in many of the other programs mentioned earlier) seems more useful. I'm afraid it's hard for me to explain my idea more clearly.

Vyach

* @verderblich * so your proposal mostly looks like «make beautiful wireframe mode». Not so lelpful. The name of isoparams is more helpful, it can give direction to search documents at least. Also you can search some, if you want such feature. It will be nice help for dev`s (to not spend their time for googling)
