Select Collections / Groups as single object.

!! NB: This might be covered by 2.8! I dont know if it is !!

Often "objects" actually consist of collections of objects. This issue has up untill now been tackled with various workflows with groups with pros/cons to each.

This is also a subject being adressed by the coming 2.8. As is this post might be seen as inspiration for the dev team:

It would be very useful if there was a way of selecting collections or groups directly and as a single object (basicly select all subobjects in a collection when clicking on an object belonging to that collection).

BTW: The model is by José Petri ( www.josepetri.com ) from BlendSwap.

Here is a mockup:

@Ejnar Brendsdal: so this is pretty much a duplicate then. I suggest you mention your mockup in the first link of yout list and remove this proposal

@Ejnar Brendsdal:

Very nice concept and UI details. Good work Ejnar, nice seeing you again.

I regard this as one of the crucial unaddressed issues in blender workflow and one of the must-have ux concepts. As for 2.80, as far as i could deduce from my irc communication with the devs, this topic is not on the list!

I started the proposition at the first link you listed. I appeal to you or any other visitor that finds this proposition useful to upvote that thread (it has the highest ranking on the topic so far), so the issue would become more visible to the devs.

Rock on CAD-ers!

@Ejnar Brendsdal: Cool! Hope you don't mind, i borrowed your nice mock-up also, it is pretty illustrative...

Also, there are some other group functions that could be mentioned here, take a look and tell me if these make sense:
