Material override on collection

Hello!

I'm an old school Softimage user, who switched to Maya (I'll call these the dark ages) and now I've been in blender for 6 months and I absolutely love it. One thing that I think no software has ever nailed down better than Softimage tough is render pass management. When I saw collections in 2.8 I was eager to see if it could match xsi in this respect, and it almost does. But one major thing missing is the ability to override materials or properties for that matter on all objects within a collection. I would love to have that ability!

I guess it would be great if when you selected a collection, there would be a tab that appears in the properties window, like the light, or camera tab, and the collection tab could contain options to override all materials in the collection, and you could even add options for ray visibility, holdouts, whatever you could imagine. I know you can right click on a collection and set it as a holdout, but I find it not very visual and easy to forget what you have done.

Anywho, hope this could gain traction, I really think it could open up a ton of possibilities for rendering.

Cheers

Matt

Various overrides on Collections (or, more specifically, instances of collections) are planned for 2.81.

Collections are such a good idea, with so much potential. They're going to develop in fantastic ways during the Everything Nodes project.

Wow, great! Any roadmap available to take a look at that you might know of? Thanks for the comment Jason.
