Add a null node (placeholder) like Houdini
Houdini has a node that serves as a placeholder and does nothing, you can simply pass geomtry through it and have it be named whatever you like. It is useful when you have a node that branches off and want a buffer node in betwen so you can add a node before the branching off point easily. Like if one node becomes 3, adding the empty node before allows you to add a node before the empty and effect the following : nodes, otherwise if the empty node was something you use, it would effec that also. Right now I use join geometry (without joining) for this purpose but it looks a bit jank and I'm not sure if it's bad for performance.
Literally just a placeholder for organization with no other purpose.
I do get in Houdini it's used often to reference an object from another but it would still be useful in blender for just organization. bb

Then maybe use the
Set Geometry Namenode?docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/geometry_nodes/geometry/write/set_geometry_name.html
So it's a node whose only job is to provide a socket to plug things for a while? Maybe i'm not understanding well, but that sounds like what the reroute node from the Layout category already does pretty well:
It's often used to... Well... Reroute noodles to help make them more readable, and it can be given a label e.g. to tell the user what data is it carrying so you don't have to scroll the view to its source, it also adds arrows on the noodles between reroutes to clearly indicate the data flow direction.
And bonus point: if you have the Node Wrangler addon enabled, you can ⇧ Shift Right🖱️ drag over an existing noodle to make a reroute on it. Which makes adding reroutes really fast.
You have just described what the reroute node does.
Fine I want the reroute node to have the option of being skinned like any other node for consistency with the colorbar uptop for the name and have it say geo on the left and right with the label called null. The dot is not helpfull visually for me.
You want a node that has geometry input and output but does nothing.
As I mentioned you can have that by using the
Set Geometry Namenode, without setting a name. This would be cool, or it would be neat to be able to change the size or shape of the reroute node
Just going to keep using join geometry without joining for this purpose doesnt seem to be bad for performance, just dont like the reroutes look, makes my eyes glaze
I agree it would be nice to be able to set a different icon for the reroute node!
