Edit linked files from context menu

In complex scenes with many linked collections from several source .blend files, I am missing the option to select the linked collection in the 3D viewport or outliner and open the source file containing that collection from a context menu. I know a well-organized, file/folder structure and naming will mitigate most of my issues. But sometimes, when revisiting an older project file, with multiple versions or variations of the same elements spread over different files, it takes valuable time to find the right source file. It's a bit frustrating, because I know Blender knows exactly which file I need to open.

So in short:

  1. Select a linked collection in the viewport or outliner
  2. Press W or right-click to open a context menu
  3. Click "Open linked library"
  4. Make changes to the linked collections and save
  5. Re-open your parent .blend file from File -> Recent

Have you tried the Edit Linked Library add-on that ships with Blender? (disclaimer: I wrote it)

* @Jason van Gumster * This should not just ship with Blender, it should be in Blender! Thanks for the info and for creating the add-on!

* @mldebee * Technically speaking, it is in Blender. It's just disabled by default because not everyone uses linked assets.

* @Jason van Gumster * Would it consume more performance/power to have this by default in blender (located somewhere else like in pie menu of edit mode options of the linked objet/collection) ? Do you have any idea why is it not by default in blender ?

I have asked if there is another addon like yours here : blender.stackexchange.com/questions/164366/easy-way-to-unlink-relink-switch-link-for-object-or-collection because i can't found any git-hub/lab of your works, and the doc is an archive.

* @yoann softyoda * Enabling it by default isn't my call. It ships by default and you can always save your User Preferences to have it enabled by default for you. I do because I use linked assets pretty frequently.

As for the ability to monkey with the linking properties themselves, I think that's probably best suited as a separate proposal (and probably a separate add-on).

FWIW, my GitHub account is linked in my profile .
