This sounds like a perfect content sensitive right mouse click menu item. Right click an object, choose rename and a text field popups with the current name and you can edit it.
Try this addon drive.google.com/file/d/1ot2FP2W4wllnZl_3_k-HBlRIVIAq0-W9/view , you can rename from viewport by Ctrl+R, it also does batch-renaming and renames the data-block as well.
* @Jan Kadeřábek * wow thanks, i will check it out, when i can. i guess it works in 2.80 as well?
* @Adam Juhasz * I just made some little changes and based on my quick testing, it should work fine in 2.8 now - let me know :)
* @Jan Kadeřábek * wow man thank you! i downloaded as a .py document, and ran it from the text editor and it gave me an error, but I went and hit ctrl+R and it worked! It also gave an error after each renaming I did with it but still WORKED :) thanks so much! I think this should be deafult, and what a good keyboard shortcut you found for it! Bravo.
* @Adam Juhasz * Install it as an addon from Preferences -> Addon -> Install, it shouldn't throw the errors :(
* @Jan Kadeřábek * Yesterday I wanted to follow up on this, but my comment couldn't be published due to server errors! So I APOLOGIZE, because it was a user error on my end, THE SCRIPT/ADDON WORKS PERFECTLY! I can't thank you enough! You've made my life easier, and this should be how it works by default in blender. I owe you at least two beers man! God bless.
* @Adam Juhasz * Haha, nice to hear it works for you. I am not the autor of the original code, I just added some options and modified it so it works in 2.8. Enjoy blending! :)
* @Adam Juhasz * Editing comments doesn't work for me either... Anyway, what I like on the script especially is that it also renames the datablock - this should be the default renaming behavior in Blender I think, as many people forget about it and can be surprised when they discover their scene is full of Cube.001 Cube.002 meshes.
* @Jan Kadeřábek * Agreed! The mesh datablocks then weirdly get written into an exported FBX file's mesh names (?!) for some reason. My experience at least.
Okay, don't waste your time watching this. :) It will happen sometime, when it gets to the top of the to-do list :) William Reynish just clarified.
