Convert Polygons to NURBS
Hi there, I picked the same title as this 3 year old post , because I want this to be more visible. Please read it if you have time.
I also work in the car industry and love using blender, but we HAVE TO use Maya to convert our stuff to NURBS (poly to patch, patch to NURBS). Everything I model has to go back to Maya so we can convert it and use it in a NURBS-friendly software.
It would be fantastic to have the following in blender:
- Import NURBS with different tessellation values (like pixyz or unreal engine 4)
- And more importantly, convert a quad mesh to NURBS.
I have no clue if this is hard to do, but it would be nice if someone could keep this in mind.

As you noted that you're posting a duplicate idea that was shared here three years ago, this idea has been around for a while (even predating this site). It's not easy to implement. There have been multiple attempts and none of them have fully succeeded.
Of course it would be nice to have, but there simply aren't that many developers who are interested in writing NURBS code.
That'd be great. In the mean time, check out the latest beta of MoI 3D , an affordable NURBS editor that has the best NURBS to polygon mesher in the industry, and the version 4 beta offers options to convert polygon meshes to NURBS as well.

ATM if you want to use patches with different tesselations, you can use patches with subsurf+Crease Apply full crease to borders and you will have smooth patch with sharp borders.
That is why NURBS are not so popular in Blender.

Greetings, I fully agree and support the idea that Blender with Polygon to NURBS conversion capability would make this fantastic application much more relevant for industrial designers(25+ years on Maya since V.1 coming from Alias Power Animator/Studio and significantly less time on Blender...). Here is an in-class demo of the Poly>SubD>NURBS workflow: youtu.be/DRZGjCP75Hc (please excuse the audio quality and the length, as it was an in-class demo)
