Toolbar right-click
* TLDR: decouple the selection from the default selection setting, make it a tool and give the user ability to choose what the right mouse button does. + first click in the viewport should decide default selection setting. *
The Proposal - toolbar and the new mouse buttons workflow
I would like to propose new workflow for the mouse buttons all together.
Since the introduction of the new toolbar i had this idea of having the LMB and RMB being able to hold two separate tools.
for example you could have selection tool * (the selection would have to be decoupled from the default selection method and made into separate tool for this to work) * on the LMB and move tool on the RMB and the default selection would only take effect in the editor types where the toolbar is not available, for example in the dopesheet where it would swap the buttons around accordingly to the preferd default method.
Now please, go and take the look at the attached picture if you already didn't.
now imagine this change in the sculpt mode where instead of RMB doing nothing because the selection is not applicable, you could have it to use crease tool. Another example could be pose mode where on the LMB you could have move tool and on RMB you could have rotation tool.
Sound nice doesn't it?
And of course, the veteran user wouldn't be afected by this change if they choose not to engage with it. it's the win for new users, win for the old users not willing to change their workflow since it's entierly avoidable and win for the users who adapt quickly since it gives them new options in certain areas.
* win-win-win situation yo! *
The Why - new user vs old user
New user wants to select with left-mouse-button, veteran user wants to select with right-mouse-button.
When new user starts to play around with new blender file for the first time, the most probable action they try to do first is to select the box in the middle of the screen.
aaaand they click the LMB and get confused by the 3D cursor jumping and the box not being selected. They also get intimidated by this and sometimes decide that learning to use blender is not worth it which is shame so this first vital click the new user does inside the viewport should be the moment when blender decides what should be the default selection button. Veteran user is probably going to use the RMB because they know this is superior choice.
With both mouse buttons being able to hold separate tools comes lot of intuitivity,efficiency and customisability that the current way lacks because it forces user to certain worflow. with this change, you change the workflow to suit your needs.
The Consequences of the changes
- Some new UI elements would have to be made for this to work, i included picture with mockup of the possible changes but some things are ommited like the issue of having two tools and only one tool drawer in the properties panel.
- The toolbar interaction would have to be slightly modifed to work with the new workflow. Here are possible new interactions for RMB and LMB. Simple clicking with either of the two main mouse buttons would select which tool is assigned to the said button. this brings up new issue however of not being able to open the contex menu on single tap of RMB. This issue could be fixed by having to hold RMB down to open the contex menu. this would also make the interaction of holding the RMB similar to holding LMB where instead of opening context menu, menu containing sub-types of the selected tools is opened.
- Some users would whine anyway i think since while it being simple change, it is radical one and let's face it, we all are passionate about blender.

Isn't left click the standard for every single system that is currently in use out there?
@roccoor: it is but veteran users are used to right click and in the blender context, it's strictly better choice.
@Omgzdenek:
I would argue that - going the opposite direction of what has been an industry standard for UI for decades was a bad choice in the first place. Veteran users right click in Blender to select but in all other software they use they have to left click event to open Blender itself.
@roccoor: hence why i made this suggestion that supports both ways seamlessly, atleast thats my opinion.
@Omgzdenek: Well, blender should support both ways for historical reasons but left click should become the default setting.
@roccoor: have you read the suggestion? i feel like you don't understand what i am proposing.
@Omgzdenek: Veterans, could switch to whatever settings they want. They are veterans after all. There is no need to torture and make all new generations of 3D artists use an obsolete and poorly designed interface. Default settings should promote the latest, best practices. Veterans also also boast all the time how customization Blender is, so you change the interface anyway. If Blender doesn't evolve that also includes making the UI more presentable, intuitive and easier to learn - less new users will pick it up and if something doesn't grow it dies out.
