Better theme selection display

I address two issues with the current theme selection system :

  1. The drop-down menu has a poor navigation system for it's usage
  2. There is no proper "currently used theme" display

Navigation

Visually, there are only up and down arrows to navigate through the list one by one on click.
You can only scroll faster by rolling the mouse wheel , which will still navigate slowly through every theme one by one, or put your mouse at the top/bottom of the list in order to scroll the list.

This is not something that annoying when you just have very few items on the list, but once you add just a few more, it becomes painful to navigate through this list.

That's why I propose to change this drop down menu a little bit :

drop down menu

  1. Make the scrollbar controllable by dragging with the mouse cursor or by scrolling via mouse wheel .
  2. Make the Ctrl + mouse wheel scrolling working
  3. (maybe do the same with other drop downs menus as soon as they need any scrolling ?)

Current Theme

For now, the current theme used is displayed only during the session during which you set it, and only in one place :

current theme display

Once you restart Blender, it turns into this :

presets

In order to make this more clear and easy to manage, I suggest two things:

  1. Make the current theme name display persistent
  2. Highlight the current theme in the list

I'd actually propose a more radical approach: Themes could have previews that we display in the preferences: (See T54115 .)

This should go with a bigger redesign on how themes are customized in Blender, the current one doesn't work really well (see T45352 ).

Radical is the word ♥

Blender's meticulous theme control is great for precise colour control, but I wish they incorporate global override options so we don't have to spend hours of trial and error and tweaking individual colour options to achieve a streamline palette along all editors. For example set all the headers to grey via global toggle/option and if you want certain headers to be a different colour, have a white list toggle to exclude them from the global effect.

@fudushae: Why not allow the user to interactively set UI elements color and Alpha? Make an interactive mode where the User can select elements they want to change the color of; instead of going through a giant list trying to figure out which item changes which color.

-EDIT-: Another option could be a rectangle (yellow red or green?) appearing around each UI element which the current selected color in the list effects.

@mcolinp: That's a good point. It should be much easier.

It would also be great if we could simply save the current preset without having to write the exact same name again. A simple disk icon would be perfect for re-saving.

also make ctrl+mousewheel scrolling work! ;)
