Animatable Linked Objects

Hi all, Linked object are a great way to work on a scene or in a character that are still in progress in another file, also a good protection since you'll be always work on an updated version according to the original file but you don't wanna accidentally alter it, just reference for something else. Maybe It's a gun that you need to animate a character using, maybe it's something someone else is still working on but it's ready enough to be used in the animation while you wait for it to be finished and magically updated by itself as the process goes in your file too; maybe It's a scene where you need to animate a character in. Maybe it's a character you need to bring into this scene to animate it in.

But this is where the problem begins, if you link a rigged object you'll have no other mode or power over it than manipulating it on object mode. Which means that you don't have pose mode, which means you can't animate it at all. Even fully rigged characters can't do much after linked other than looking pretty in the scene.

Linked files are a vital part of studio pipeline, but right now it doesn't do much more than reference.

It make sense not to have edit mode, but maybe we could have an exception just for pose mode, even if it only mantains the newly created actions locally in this file at least.

Hi Arthur. Please lookup what library overrides can do for you. It can handle exactly what you’re proposing and much more. It is used by many studios already in productions where an modeller , rigger, animator can work independently.

See docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/files/linked_libraries/library_overrides.html Although it is a complex system so following a tutorial might be helpful
