Smooth Zoom via Scroll Wheel

Unfortunetly, Blender does not currently offer a zoom via the scroll wheel that is smooth. It only allows for stepped zoom that looks rather choppy and the only way to fix this is via keyboard shortcuts that aren't as elegant as just scrolling the scroll wheel.

I'm simply proposing the option for a smooth in and out zoom to be added to the scroll wheel. It's a standard feature in other 3D software, so I would love to see Blender implement the same :)

There already is a "smooth" zoom using ⎈ Ctrl Middle 🖱️Drag .

It also have the advantage of not having the "slowing down" effect as it comes closer to the zoomed-in object, unlike the zoom we get from using the Wheel 🖱️ .

You have to drag the mouse. In a browser, you don't drag the entire mouse for smooth scrolling; you just scroll the wheel, right?

Of course, old-timers will say this isn't a professional workflow, and they're right. For their own group, they're right. Blender is also used by amateurs. And this segment of users is even larger than the professional ones, wouldn't you agree? And many of them would be willing to use it. Some of them will become professionals. And they'll get used to this feature, just like everyone else has gotten used to smooth scrolling in a browser. Do you notice the "slowing down" effect in your browser? I didn't know about this effect until you mentioned it. ❤️ In any case, it should be an option. The choice. And it will be in demand. Would appeal to a huge number of even well-established professionals. It should be an option with its own settings. Not like in a browser. Thank you❤️

Look at the smooth animation of the View →Frame Selected View → Frame All . Beautiful, isn't it? Someone worked hard to implement it. Made it beautiful, attractive. Put effort into it. But some people probably don't like it. So should it be banned? Of course not. It should be optional. Customizable. Preferred. Just like millions of things in the program. Many users will find it appropriate. Not everyone needs that jaw-dropping speed, where we gain 0.001 seconds of speed every time we scroll the mouse wheel. Many will prefer a smoother experience and enjoyment of the process. It will become commonplace. Normal. Rough scrolling will remain only for hardcore professionals. Please don't take this feature away from us just because you don't need it 🙏❤️

Semi-related thing that would be neat for Blender to have is better support for trackpads and such. Specifically, they usually provide a gradual precise mousewheel input events, which allows for smooth yet precise scrolling in various applications that support it, kind of like a touchscreen.

It'd be neat to have Blender support this input, so that I could precisely set the zoom level with a two finger scroll gesture.
