idea: see-through background

Have an option to make the background of the viewport see-through so that you can see what is behind the window. so that you can put up a reference image behind the window for quick reference work or you could watch a movie or chat while working without losing screen space or adding additional monitors. It may already be possible, but I can't find how. blenderidea.png

I have a different opinion. right now i only have a laptop with very limited screen space. I get bored if blender is the only thing i have up and if I have a video up, just listening to the sound i get distracted wanting to look at it from time to time and i end up just watching the video. putting reddit in the background was probably not a good idea i just wanted to show off the idea with something neutral and impersonal. I'm not saying it should be the default setting. I think it could help SOME workflows be more productive. haven't tried reference video feature yet.

That sounds unnecessary, makes the whole thing less readable, and not productivity-focused:

  • There are already background images out of the box for having image/video references in the viewport that do a better job than what you propose by having full flexibility and integration in the 3d space.
  • addons like Easyref that make it even easier to use
  • OS-level tools like AltSnap to handle any window's opacity (and many other cool things), if not already included in the OS (Linux)
  • if you really want to watch youtube while in Blender, you can use picture-in-picture mode from your browser.

No just no. I'm already distarcted enough as it is. Also do your other apps e.g. your browser have trasparency, e.g. because whilst scrolling news you want to write a word document behind it? lol
