SDF-GI - Realtime almost-no-lightleaking no baking global illumination

The Alpha version of Godot 4 recently got SDFGI, a new type of realtime global illumination similar to the new lighting in Unreal5. Its an amazing approximation of unlimited diffuse bounces with almost zero light leaking and no baking.

Godot and SDFGI are MIT licensed so technically Blender could incorporate this next-gen tech into EVEE

I've briefly played with the nightly builds of Godot to test this out and its absolutely stunning and impressive tech developed by Juan.

Would love to see EVEE with this.

Not going to happen. Eevee dev doesn't like it enough. Alt text

* @NelsonNAS * To give a bit more context- this is actually a pretty awful GI solution on the whole- it's only bouncing light and not color. Granted, it's fairly fast but without color bounce it's a waste of time. There are much better realtime GI solutions out there, especially on the high end (IE: DDGI).

Those godot screenshots that everybody is excited about remind me of the days of pre-color-bounce lightmaps in videogames, doesn't look accurate at all .

for the OP to imply this is anything like UE5's lumen system is disingenuous at best.

* @testure * and DDGI is planned: developer.blender.org/T68463

edit:answered the wrong person.

* @testure * You're mistaken. It fully supports colored bounces. Been using it since Juan merged it. If you only look at the screenshots and have not tested and/or followed the development you're not getting the full idea of the tech.

Until Lumen/UE5 is available its fair to compare various modern real-time solutions that don't require baking.

If Clement feels it wouldn't be good fit for EEVEE then I'm sure he has his reasons. But this is good and impressive tech with a broad use case and low hardware requirements for its quality.

Try it. :)

I'm just going by what you linked. There is no color bounce ANYWHERE in any of the stuff you linked. I'm watching a video that was posted on June 24th and a strong directional light is shining on a red surface bouncing white light off of it, couldn't be more clear than that. If I'm mistaken, feel free to provide examples.

* @testure * If you can stomach programmer art then youtube.com/watch

Here`s a little gfycat for you showcasing a spotlight hitting various colored surfaces. gfycat.com/criminalselfassureddevilfish

I`ve exaggerated the indirect just for you :) But do note that this is a nightly alpha build so im sure some stuff is broken. But it does support colored bounces, rough glossiness and lots of other more contemporary shading paradigms.

* @platerytter * I stand corrected, that looks pretty good! though still not as accurate as some other solutions it's definitely not useless like I had imagined. thanks for the examples!

platerytter Author

* @testure * Its rough around the edges, some features are severely broken in the alpha. And the whole SDFGI isn`t fine tuned. Hence all the programmer art but the underlaying tech is really imopressive, and have been super fun to use.

Early days :)

It is not leak free! Stop repeat this PR from Godot...

* @fayscrin * You`re right. I got it wrong in the title but had the correct framing in the comment "almost zero light leaking"

Woah this looks crazy. Could you share the link to the Godot 4.0 nightly builds? I couldn't find them.

* @Salai Vedha Viradhan * Highly unstable and in Alpha, ive only tested linux version. But the rendering is just gorgeous! Including glossy and blurry reflections.
