per-spline/curve-point shapekey blend levels on bevel curves
Imagine creating a circle curve A, then adding an additional shapekey where it is a square. Then use it as the bevel curve for some spline B. You can only blend the shapekeys for curve A as a whole, but what if you could set the shapekey blend weights for each spline point of B, meaning the geometry could interpolate between shape keys along the spline length. You could create a curve that goes from circle to square and back, and any intricate bevel shape. And, it should be animateable.
My "inspiration" was that I was making an intestinal path cross section, using curves, and I wanted to be able to animate the intestines "widening", which involved having the visible inner portion opening up. revealing more of the inside of the organ. I was using a shapekey on a bevel curve on my spline to form the opening along the intestines, but if I could animate that shapekey along splines, I could have animated it opening very naturally along the spline length. Instead I wrote a script to manually set vertex colors along an axis, and used those vertex colors to drive the shapekey weight.
I'm sure this feature could lead to many other cool animation possibilities with curves.
I would like to contribute this feature myself, but I'd also like to first see if the community thinks it's worth it. I certainly had a use case for it, and I think there are plenty more if it's possible.
