Grease Pencil Shape keys
If you don't feel like reading, see it in motion here
I'm using grease pencil in a project, and when I compared it to other industry 2d animation software, I found that there are some missing features, I've already posted some proposals, and I'll continue to do so while I'm progressing in my project.
In this proposal i was trying to make a feature similar to ( symbols in Adobe animate ) and ( smart bones in moho studio ) without violating blender logic.
so the best way to do it way through shape keys.
you can morph a shape and add a driver to it and link it to your rig.
There are few things GP shape keys should have that mesh keys don't:
-
It should be per layer shape keys, so think of it like material sockets, you first create a socket then assign it to a GP layer then create your shape keys.
-
The layer you want to add a driver to should have only one key-frame, so if you choose one with an animation in it, blender should show you an error with this limitation.
-
You edit a shape key through sculpt tools to guarantee that the transition goes as intended, but you still can draw a whole different shape and blender will interpolate it just like it does in timeline animation.
-
The color of a layer with shape keys should turn purple in layers panel, and if you try to edit it/ add keyframes to it, it wont allow you and show you an error like" this layer has shape keys, plz edit it in shape keys panel.
Now here is the fun part ( I'll discuss it in an upcoming post with images):
Forget about shape keys for a second! okay lets discuss another concept :
Imagine that you can add a driver directly to a layer: and when you do it turns say purple , then whenever you move the object (driver) you assigned it to, it plays the animation in it.
okay this is it for now, please check out the video below, and If you like the idea, support it with your suggestions and thumb up.

Yes!, I think one could mark a layer as "animated" or "shapekeyed" so to differentiate from eachother easily, this would be really sweet
@Luciano Muñoz: I hope they listen soon! Thanks
Thanks for your post. I hope this really gets in. This is outstanding. I didn´t know we couldn´t do them shapes. I´ll try to fix a video about this. Vertex groups are of the essence here. BAsically THIS COULD BE done in a snappy.
@3dcinetv: I'm very glad to hear this, and I hope developers will agree.
Makes sense. Vector art like animation abilities.
@ondraise15: GP is already awesome but it has the potential to be way more than it is now
Yes! Please!
gosh I need this so bad
