Import multiple object files (obj, fbx, etc)

This is pretty straight forward. Blender should be able to import multiple object files at a time, at least obj and fbx by shift-clicking or box selecting. Now it imports only the last file in selection list. This will free users from tedious one by one file importing and from using a script.

As a large obj file often takes a long time to import, there should be a progress bar for each file importing routine, as well as the overall progress bar.

There's an inherent trade-off here. Even single objects with large vertex counts often take a long time to import without much feedback to the user. This problem would be exacerbated with multiple large objects. Perhaps your proposal could include mention some kind of progress slider that updates on each object.

Fixed that, thank you.

This seems to be resolved with the FBX importer, but the OBJ importer still only imports single files as of 3.2. It would be great to be able to import multiple OBJ files at once!

maybe using a blender instance as background task to make the import and append the result file as they are ready would to make a progress bar (object 4/20 for example) and let the UI responsive for the user. It would be even possible to run as much instances as there are processors -1 to make it multi-threaded.

Old thread, new comment: at least could we get a multi-format import browser? It's tedious when you want to bring in a model and you can't remember what format it is, so you navigate to the folder and check and then you have to select the right importer and navigate to it again. Wouldn't it be better if you could click "import" and then be able to browse all available formats and then select the appropriate importer from the side panel? And I know someone's gonna say why don't you just copy the path from when you search the first time, but that's a workaround.

This is supposed to be the solution for Blender >3.3; I still have to try it: blender.stackexchange.com/questions/5064/how-to-batch-import-wavefront-obj-files/5065

It still doesn't work with other file formats imports like .svg. Any plan to generalize that feature?

Hi all, I know this thread is old, but looks like new comments. Here's a simple solution using Python within Blender: blender.stackexchange.com/a/5065
