File browser: remember sorting rule, import/export/save settings, last path

Guys, why do you stopped on the halfway? I mean, now filebrowser can remember display mode, but still can`t remember sorting order. And last visited path.

Usually I use sort by time and I need to click it each time… Literraly each time even working with the same project and same session… It forces me to keep file browser opened and minimized in shading room for example instead opening textures from node time by time.

UPD: So, during discussion I found next ideas, what to remember and when

Globals:

  • sorting order (context menu->save) — Done
  • image save settings (I think, it is personal preference than unique for each project)
  • open .blend file parameters

Per file (can be in startup file too):

  • image and objects import settings — partially done
  • object/file export settings — partially done
  • last used path — Done (last action path, save 4 example)

I think, it is the same pleasant thing as saving state of layout/scene, that allows to start exactly where you finished before.

I would love a right click → set as default.

Or, the "save startup file" should also save those.

* @-L0Lock- * agree. Setting as default for file. And if it set for startup file, it will be default for all new.

testure

the whole file browser is getting reworked in 2.8.1 or 2.8.2, can't remember which- but it was talked about on Blender Today a few weeks back.

This would be a huge quality of life improvement

* @Vasyl * anyway talking about it brings ideas and show to devs, that ppl interested!

* @ Vyacheslav * I actually been using this addon for years gist.github.com/p2or/59b2795f011f2f024f5e781d1a33a5da which basically does the same thing. This is def something users would appreciate if it was implemented

* @Vasyl * I used it too with 2,79, but native solution is much more pleasant.

Also needs to remember image format settings. Bit irritating having to constantly select jpg and drag to 100% quality.

* @tibbyninja * Do you mean for Rendering? I thought you could save Render settings as part of the default startup file. That is, set your image type, then go to File -> Save User Settings.

You can save this as your default format & settings, but let's say you want to keeep another default format in your startup file: you have no way to keep 100% quality as default for jpeg.

I completely agree with you. Especially because of the new file browser in the dailies. In some situaitons it makes a step forward, but in some a bit step backward.

Here my note I've mentioned already in the developer discussions:

My most missing feature is to have the same window settings every time, when I reopen it. I really don’t like to reset my file window filters to my preferred needs, everytime when I open it.

It would help us a lot, if the file window would not only remember the same recent location, but the recent filter settings too. And the very best would be, if this settings would be saved into the blend file to reuse them the next time.

So here my wishes, that would solve a lot of problems in my opinion:

Save the file window user settings for the current session and individual Blender areas, if possible (File windows for Scene files, image files, append files etc.), . Don’t reset the file window settings, when the window will be reopened.

Save the file window settings into the current .blend file to use then for future work.

What do you thing about this?

bump to this topic. Now it desired even more with new filebrowser, that forces to make more clicks instead one to change sorting order

would love it if the window size were stored for file browsers used for importing/exporting keymaps or installing addons.

Also last path can be saved for each project file. Just because different projects will use different locations and common locations are in the short list already.
