Vert groups for surface, curves, etc.
Right now Vert groups for surface not exist just shape keys. It's require to have this same option to support fast job around surface and not repeat selection in advanced surface objects. projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/111365

"Surface" is very vague. The issue you linked shows a NURBS Curve, and I reckon is expected to be about any curve type object.
I add info to request about curves, etc. Not identified full weakens around as no implementation
