More than one auto-save
Hello everyone!
I hope this is the right place for my stuff, but it says Ideas for Blender, so I think it can't be too wrong.
Yesterday I lost five hours of my animation work, because I got a blue screen. Not nice, but I thought I can recover it with the autosave. Well, it seems like Blender did the new autosave just while Blender crashed, and as a result the file is corrupted (DNA block missing). My last actual save was unfortunately five hours ago. I know it's my fault, but it would be nice and smart, if Blender can at least store two autosaves to prevent cases as mine.
I don't know you can't configure this in the options. Maybe it's a technical limitation (I don't think so). That's what the documentation says: "When recovering an Auto Saved file, any changes made since the last Auto Save will be lost. Only one Auto Saved file exists for each .blend file, i.e. Blender does not keep older versions. Therefor, you will only be able to restore the most recent Auto Save file."
I hope you understand my intentions. (I was a bit mad)

You didn't press SAVE for 5 hours?
Sorry, that's on you.
You can change the auto save to happen every few minutes, and then limit how many it keeps on disk.
In your case it sounds like you're using an addon that uses modals. Modals stop autosave from working. Disable all addons and autosave will start working again. Turn them on one at a time to find the culprit, then set it on fire.
It's not your fault that you're in a flow. You should think about creative things, not about saving a new file every 10 minutes because software can't do it for you. I have a similar issue - my files at the end of a project often have 4-10 GB and I lost part of my work many times because of faulty autosave.
Maybe this could help you github.com/1C0D/Multi_Auto_Save-Blender - it works but it has been 3 years since the last update...
You didn't lose the work because faulty autosave. You lost it because you chose not to save it.
This is Computer 101 since decades. Save your work.
Sure, you may disagree - but since I've been using this add-on, my problem has never happened again -> optimize your workflow
besides, other programs have this functionality, I wonder why...
Sorry, but autosave is a basic QOL function that works without issue in any modern software. The whole "it's the user's fault" argument is very poor when you consider that pretty much any other 3D suite has working autosave out-of-the-box and there's no chance of losing work, even if the user doesn't use the software as intended.
How the hell do you not manually save for FIVE HOURS? Sorry, but as thorn said, that's on you. This is a painful lesson we all have to learn at some point, and now it's your turn.
Always. save. often. ESPECIALLY after a big moment or action in your animation project.
