VRAM usage/texture compression tool (ability to optimize textures or see whats heavily impacting VRAM)

Perhaps listing textures and allowing users to sort by filesize, with options to compress images (as unoptimized scenes taking up as much as 8GB of VRAM isn't uncommon, which compression could help with). Would be useful for those running on lower-end systems or wanting to try and reduce the file-size of their .blends

Ability to compress textues is a good idea. In large scenes it's very easy to consume much of VRAM with textures, which consume VRAM much faster than just geometry. I have one scene. On my 32Gb machine with just geometry, 15% of memory. Turn on textures, 85% of memory, and that requires much fiddling to stop it exceeding available memory.

You can have hundreds of textures which makes its really hard to optimize, but something Blender could do to help is automatically downscale textures of meshes on distant objects (considering bounding box size and distance).

Not just for low-end systems too, high-end ones, since people are going to use that RAM anyway!

Also useful when you want to preview a large scene in the GUI and render in batch - which gives you much more memory to use, but if you can't preview the scene in the GUI, that's not much help.
