Control over duplicate suffix format (.001, -01, _1, etc.)
Blender should expose a preference giving users the ability to change the suffix convention of duplicated data blocks. For example, duplicating 'Cube' could be named 'Cube-01' or 'Cube_1' instead of 'Cube.001'. The ability to choose the delimiter and padding amount would probably be sufficient.
I imagine there are many users with custom naming conventions that differ from the standard .001 suffix, and have to use add-ons to rename their data, or change everything manually. Not to mention teams and studios that adhere to strict naming styles that would benefit from something lilke this.

Now that I think about it, this functionality seems like it may fit somewhere in the midst of the Project Setup in development now. projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/133001
Yes, design wise this could be in the scene settings, somewhere below the units.
Would be super nice for people working across more name restrictive platforms as well 👍
I feel like an environment with such strict rules would require their artists not call everything "cube."
In other words, the problem isn't .001 vs _001. It's that you should think twice about having 200 objects in the scene called "cube". And there are several good existing addons that offer bulk renaming, which actually solves the real problem.
I’d argue that using an addon to rename objects that are named a way you don’t prefer is not really at the heart of this idea. Imagine if Blender forced users to stick to the default EaseIn EaseOut keyframe interpolation, and didn’t let them default to Linear. Sure, there are addons that could batch convert your keyframes to linear, but that side-steps why Blender gives us that preference. It’s about avoiding the need to revise something down the line if you know how you want it structured from the beginning.
