FILE LINKER (WITH AUTO UPDATE) FOR ARCHVIZ and many other workflows

Today, 3ds Max remains the industry standard for architectural visualization primarily because of its real-time file linking capabilities (fbx), which ensure seamless compatibility with widely used architectural design software like Revit, Archicad, and Rhino. This feature is crucial for architecture offices, as it allows designers to iterate quickly, manage multiple design variations, and update models without having to redo the entire workflow of material shading, texturing in the visualization software.

It’s important to highlight that, today, architects don’t use renders only as a final representation tool, renders have become a fundamental part of the design process itself. Being able to visualize spaces, materials, and light during the design phase helps inform decisions and improve the quality of the project from the very beginning.

What truly would make the difference is the ability to update geometry, unwrapping and materials within blender software without losing any progress when importing updated files from the main project platform. Bringing this kind of dynamic linking into Blender would dramatically improve the workflow for architects and significantly enhance Blender’s potential as a professional tool in the architecture industry.

I truly believe this would be a game-changer for architectural visualization in Blender, and I hope you'll consider implementing such a feature. Thank you!

FBX is a closed format. Doing the complex integration like you're proposing on a closed format like FBX has a high potential to decrease stability and doubles the testing effort.

I don't believe that FBX would be able to meet the requirements you would have for the integration and reproducibility and stability. That has to do that the applications you are referring to are commercial and have special agreements with Autodesk.

I rather propose to stick to open standards that have been proven to be able to use in such a way. More tools (even architecture tools) are migrating to use open standards like USD/glTF. USD has been developed to do these complex integration and a lot of development effort is already being done to make sure it works seamlessly.

I wasn’t aware that FBX is a closed format—what you’re saying makes a lot of sense! It makes me wonder whether this feature could be implemented using another format, like OBJ or USD (as you are saying) or even other formats shared across all the 3d softwars because at the moment as far as I know it’s nearly impossible to link geometry using any format. Introducing a proper linking system would truly make Blender a much more powerful tool across many different use cases.
