Close windows without dragging
For now you can't just close window, but forced to drag another one over it, and as if it were not enough, this two windows should have identical width or height (depending of their locations) to have ability to be closed. It's completely counterintuitive. I would expect to have "X" button somewhere in a corner, or "Close" item in the header's popup menu at least.

These are called "areas", not "windows".
You can right-click on a border and select
join area. Also, you don't need to perfectly align any area to join them since Blender v3.0The thing is, because of how Blender's UI works by splitting and joining, you need to somehow decide how the ui adapts when you "close" an area. Which is what the current corner drag / join menu systems do well.
If you wanted to close the text editor in the scripting workspace by using a x button, which area should take over? There are six areas around it, three on the left and three on the right. Should it give advantage to one side or another? Should they meet at the center of the used-to-be text editor or should one side just meet the other where it is?
The 'same width or height' limitation does not exist any more. You can shoot a window through an existing one, now. It's been there since 3.1, I think?
Otherwise it's a slippery slope, really. You don't want the drag corners to be too big because you could accidentally hit them during edit. And if you just "close" a window ... which one will fill it? All of the windows are in a non overlaping layout so how to decide which one will be the one to be dragged into the space of the closed one?
I wouldn't mind if you can right click anywhere in a window, and a convenient press of a letter (on the left side of the keyboard since my right hand is on the mouse) would close the window
