High contrast EEVEE shader

The MatCap is very useful for many Blender users because it highlights contours in a mesh. However, it is made for Blenders "Solid" mode (Workbench). Workbench doesn't support normal maps since EEVEE and Cycles already exist. I propose to add an alternative to MatCap but in EEVEE. This would allow users to see their normal maps more clearly when working on their projects.

Maybe I misunderstand this proposal, but I am seriously confused reading it.

Matcaps are not specifically designed for "highlighting contours of a mesh". It's a fast screenspace shading, which may have this effect with some specific matcap. But so does any kind of material. Mix a fresnel at the end of any nodetree, and you have a form of contour highlight too.

Are you proposing to make matcaps available in Eevee ? You can make matcap shaders any way you like in Eevee and Cycles:

And Workbench supports matcaps too, as you can set it to matcap lighting and install any custom matcap texture you like - the same way you'd do in the viewport's solid view:

workbench matcap

Make a new high contrast shader? What shader would that be specifically? What is that you are trying to do that isn't possible with the current nodes?

Hi -L0Lock-!

Nice node setup. It looked almost identical when I tried to replicate it myself according to your node setup as shown in your picture (except I used "basic_1.exr").

However, even if it managed to simulate the Workbench MatCap, it failed to do so with tangent space normals. I still want to use basic_1.exr with normal maps. Thanks for your attempt to help me.

You can plug your tangent space normal data the same way as in any shader:

I propose to add an alternative to MatCap but in EEVEE.
