obj/fbx importer that can import vertex color and vertex groups if present in the file
I'm trying to import a model from houdini which has both vertex color and vertex/point groups.
I've tried obj, fbx, and alembic so far.
With Obj I can get the vertex groups in if i choose 'keep vert order' and tick 'poly groups', but then I don't get the vertex colours.
With fbx I can get the vertex colour only, no groups.
alembic brings through vertex colour only too.
An importer which can bring in both is 100% necessary when bringing in geometry from Houdini.

I am trying to export vertex color from Houdini to Blender using Alembic. Can you tell me how you did it I can't get this to work. Thanks
* @sylvain.berger * I cant remember now, I suspect I just used the generic file output node (or whatever it's called) and set it to abc format. Either that or I used the specific alembic out node (if there is one, cant remember off the top of my head).
* @3d -illusions.co.uk * I found out that the Cd attribute always imports in Blender, so used the Cd attribute to store my data and I got it to import in Blender
This sounds like the problem is in Houdini's exporter, or the formats themselves. Maybe try gltf if it's supported. The problem is that vertex color and groups are stored differently in different apps-- Blender stores vertex groups at the object level, but it stores vertex colors on vertex-face corners. This is also how those formats store the data.
Anyways, this is easy to workaround, since you can bring both in seperately. First, there's the copy vertex group to selected operator (select the mesh without the groups, then the mesh with the groups-- then, in the properties panel, there's a list of vertex groups in the MESH tab. Underneath the minus symbol, there's a little arrow. Click it and choose copy vertex groups to selected). Another possibility is using the DATA TRANSFER modifier, it can do several different data transfers, but what you want is Face Corner > vCol (All groups, by name). Make sure the meshes are on top of each other!
Finally, it's worth noting that Blender doesn't support alpha in vertex colors (yet).
