Vertex Masking
I would love to mask or lock vertices in edit mode. I know that this functionality exists in sculpt mode, but it would be really nice to have in edit mode. Right now, I have to hide part of the mesh to keep from editing it, make a change blind, unhide the mesh to check the change, and then reselect and hide the mesh I don't want to change...
Modo allowed for locking and unlocking, but I think that Blender can do it better. In Modo there was no visual feedback for what was masked or locked, and what was still editable. Blender could use the same shading it uses in sculpt mode to show what is masked.
If this already exists in Blender and I don't know about it, please let me know!

Nice idea! This could also work with converting an attribute to vertex mask.
Yes! I used to use the mask modifier for this but the problem is you will still be selecting/changing the elements in edit mode even though you can't see them which makes it unusable for this task.
