Preserve Open Edges option in Sculpt mode
WHAT PROPOSED
- Simply option to preserve " open " edges in Sculpt mode.
WHY?
To simplify and speed up work in specific situation when it is necessary. It can be done for today manually by quick painting mask on simple mesh or by few steps operation with Edit Mode for complex mesh. Here example GIF ( from 2.79 but in 2.8 things work same way ). To much extra moves when it should be done by just turning ON/OFF one menu option....
As always - thanks for reading. Also you can check my other suggestions .

This would not only be good for terrain, but for loose character parts as well.
Just a little "tickbox" please?
I think you should call it "Pin Borders" to maintain consistency with the UI... maybe there's a way to recommend this feature to the new Sculpting Improvement Branch?
* @Josephbburg * That's a terrible name -- it's too specific.
This is applicable to more than "Borders" on a grid (i.e. character parts, hair card roots, wall details with culled backfaces, etc., etc.)
"Pin Open Edges" would be just fine though.
* @acethegamemaster * They are called border edges in every software. Everywhere else in Blender's UI, this feature is referred to as "Pin Borders" (for example, the corrective smooth modifier). It has nothing to do with a grid, it's a concept in topology.

For me it's not so important how guys who will do it call it and where they will place checkbox - I just thought that it would be good to have such option and write about it :)
* @Josephbburg * -- That's fair -- Even so, "Pin Open Edges" is still more descriptive and discoverable to new users. IMO, Blender should change its terminology.
i find myself needing this a lot as well, but I just do what you've shown in your gif and it's not that big of a deal. that said, i'll give you an upvote for a papercut that could save me a few seconds down the road
