lock the stencil size/position relative to the image in the image editor
Apologies if this is possible, but I can't see an option for it, so my proposal is to lock the stencil size/position relative to the image in the image editor.
Currently the image stays relative to the editor, not the image. So if you zoom in or out, or change the size of the editor, the stencil becomes out of alignment with the image.

Can you provide an image or two illustrating what you are saying? I am trying to reproduce the idea here but am not sure myself what is being asked. The Stencil mapping allows for the image brush texture to be manipulated as if using a stencil and marking brush, with the option to scale it up. Are you wanting it to be locked to the size of the brush or the size of the original pixel dimensions of the stencil texture?
Thanks. To the pixel dimensions of the image being painted onto so you can zoom in and out and it remain aligned.
At the moment I have two identically sized images, and i'm trying to use one of them to paint onto the other, so need the images to align perfectly and also stay aligned when zooming in and out.
Would be handy to be able to snap the stencil to the image too, based on the top left corner, so if they're the same dimensions, they'll align perfectly without needing to try manually eyeballing it.
I get it now. Not a total solution, but have you tried using the Clone Tool in the Image Editor yet? It works similar to what the first part you said, where you choose an image to paint from in the tool and it is the original size but you cannot scale it up or down or rotate, and you can only grab it to move it around.
In the Clone Tool in the 3d View, however, you would use your second image as an unconnected texture node in the shader and declare that in the tool panel as the source when checking 'Clone from Paint Slot', and this would align it without any chance of moving it accidentally.
Either way, what you are asking for is a good improvement for Stencil though as Stencil allows more flexible use of image textures.
