The selection option buttons should switch highlights when holding the shift or controll button
When holding shift you can add to the selection. When holding control you can subtract from the selection. This should be made visible by highlighting the currently active selection modifier. It would be a nice indicator of what's going to happen if you drag your selection box across the selection.
Alternatively, the cursors could change. Similar to some other software packages.

Yes, there should be highlight feedback on keyboard press.
OMG - download and try it. Hmmm .. It ignore any Shift or Ctrl or any otherі. So this is what devs propose us - to click at this buttons all the time? To become such " slowpoke clickers "? Work slow, click this, click that, hotkeys/PIEs - no, we don't heard about this...
Holding Shift and Ctrl do work to add or remove selections. The only thing it doesn't do, is update the display of the buttons while holding those modifiers.
This would be great to add, but for technical reasons with the way this is coded makes it not so trivial. But this would indeed be nice to add.
