Blender 4.1, add option to the smooth by angle modifier to insert new modifiers above it.
Now auto smooth by angle has changed in 4.1, and there's no longer the ability to auto calculate normals from the angle set in the data panel, we have to use the smooth by angle modifier instead.
To mimic previous version of Blender without having to manually keep moving the smooth by normals modifier, I think it would be great to have an option on the modifier 'new modifiers above', so all modifiers created afterwards will be inserted above the smooth by angle modifier.

While I like the idea of having this particular modifier stay at a specific position, I also think some other modifiers sometimes need to stay at either the top or bottom of the stack (i.e. subdiv and armature deform).
In that regard, perhaps a better solution would be to be able to "pin" any modifier/constraint at the bottom.
This could be in the form of a pin button on the modifier header or a checkbox in the drop-down menu. Pinning a modifier "down" would make any new modifier go automatically above. If multiple modifiers are pinned, they simply keep their relative as set by the user, while new modifiers are added above the lot of pins.
this idea could also work for any stack UI in blender
Well I think you'd only need an option to place new modifiers above, because leaving the option unticked would revert to the current behaviour of placing new ones below.
True true... I was overthinking it
Modifier collections would be mostly welcome. I did some mockup here: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/lpW6/
I can't actually find the "smooth by angle" modifier. I built 4.1 from source. Anything special I need to find this geometry node modifier?
Edit: for anyone else building from source (I know this is not the right place, but just in case), you need to make sure you have the "assets" folder checked out from SVN and living in your lib folder:
