I have a 3d viewer plugin for the quicklook features of Mac OS that works with .obj .dae and .fbx - Windows seems to be able to preview .obj and one other file type as well. Perhaps when an object is marked as an asset it auto generates .obj data for it that can be easily used for 3d preview in the asset browser. Might also be good to have a streamlined process within blender for rendering a preview image and embedding it in the file as the icon/preview of a particular asset.
