Viewport background cache

When doing motion tracking, it is possible to "prefetch" frames for smooth playback of image sequences. However, there is no way to do something similar for backgrounds in the viewport.

Currently, the workaround is to bring them into the sequencer / compositor (or Nuke) and cache the frames there. That adds complexity to the process which slows iteration time.

The proposal is to add caching in the 3D viewport for animated background plates / movie clips.

Well ideally, any video and image sequence asset should be cache-able no matter where it is used.

Absolutely, though I can't think of where else it isn't cached. Possibly in material / shader editors?
