Custom resolution per render layer
Currently when having multiple render layers in the compositor and rendering through f12 or ctrlf12 (as opposed by clicking the individual render layer render buttons), the resolution of all the different render layers will be set to the resolution of the scene you are currently working in, instead of using the custom resolution that's set within each individual scene.
This means currently you cannot render an animation with multiple render layers where different render layers have a unique resolution, which is a very straightforward way of vastly optimizing your render time.
Use case examples
- A smoke simulation rendered on a separate render layer at a lower resolution for it to afterwards be upscaled to be composited over a main scene layer.
- The background of a scene that is out of focus rendered at a lower resolution for it to be upscaled and blurred in the compositor before it gets composited behind the foreground render layer which is in focus rendered at full resolution.

I agree with this suggestion. Currently I have the same problem. I want to create sprite sheets with the compositor, as a combination of renderings of different scenes. For that I need different resolutions for scenes and final compositing. Other rendersettings of the scenes are taken into account, but not the rendersize.
It feels more like a bug than a feature request. The triage team sees this as a feature request. I respect this decission, but I can't agree.
I have had posted a bug report (before searching here) about it, but it got rejected.

Was going to add the same request on RCS, but found this one. I highly support this request.
Yes, please. But not just resolution. All render related settings should be changeable - and if untouched, inherit/follow settings from first layer.
Agreed. Maybe there could be a checkbox in the render layer properties panel for the user to decide if they want to inherit from current scene, or use the render layers own unique settings.
Though it looks like currently things like sample count, light bounces, etc are determined based on the individual scene settings, as expected, and it is just the resolution that's being changed to match scene where they're composited/rendered from.
All render settings AND file output settings.
You might wanna take a look at the file output node. imgur.com/a/gbqAGlT
The file output node only affects the settings of the saved file. You still can't render at a different resolution.
Yeah I know, but you commented about the ability to change file output settings per render layer/scene, which you can do through the file output node, unless I'm misunderstanding what you meant?
You can do this using Scene containers.
Could you describe how? What do you mean by "Scene containers"?
