inner shell for 3d printing
it's just an idea for gsoc 2016wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Ref/GoogleSummerOfCode/2016/IdeasHigher Quality Solidify Modifier

Benefits: This makes it a much easier for anyone who is 3D printing to make a solid shell from a mesh without having to manually create the shell.

Description: While Blender already has a solidify modifier, this is intended to be fast, for animation and real-time editing, this project would involve writing a modifier that performs more comprehensive computations to create a solid shell from a mesh.

But the inner shell should be a bit smoothed (maybe based on a Factor Value) if possible.
Or if they just added the programing for the solidify modifier to self eliminate as it crossed itself. then you could remesh to get rid of any points.
I'd very much welcome this. ZBrush already offers this, using voxel volume calculations to ensure a consistent wall thickness and no intersecting polygons.
If you don't mind, could you include the text of the proposal, rather than just linking to another page. That way, it's way more clear what you're asking for.
added :)
