File Dialogs Similar to Various UI/UX Guidelines (sorting, selection, choosing, etc)

Some file dialog functionality that people expect to see (focusing on functionality that is also in various UI/UX guidelines and GUI widgets of various frameworks):

  • sorting method at top of column
  • filtering method right aligned above column headings, with some indicator such as symbol or label (in some GUI frameworks, there is a search box with a magnifying glass--in Blender's case you could have a funnel symbol [or the word "Filters:"] before the filter buttons)
  • "up" widget not as a list item, but rather a separate button (currently is in both places; currently selecting by drawing a box ending at the top of the list can change the filename to ".." and change the button to "Parent Directory" preventing certain actions--known to happen with Append)
  • common hotkeys such as Ctrl A
  • double-click to enter a folder or choose a file (or at least filter out double-click to prevent opening folder then immediately opening file on next screen unexpectedly, as currently double-click is treated as two clicks)
  • some indicator that the filename box is a filename (generally filename input box is below the listview widget, and sometimes the word "Filename:" or "File:" or "Name:" is before the input box).
  • press enter once to confirm dialog (instead of only confirming name when name is being edited--in that case, pressing enter again or the confirm button is required currently)
  • show date by default when in a "details" listview mode (currently Blender's default listview mode is a blend of what various UI frameworks would consider "list" [name beside icon, but continue list in another column after hits bottom of visible area, and at that point require scrolling horizontally] and "details" [show file info in columns right of file], but does not show any file info by default other than size -- yet scrolls right, preventing an easy way to implement column headings [but maybe without changing much, the headings row could be put in place of the ".." widget])
