Auto-Pause Rendered Viewports across open Blender instances

Hey, I often switch between different Blender instances in Rendered Shading mode (Cycles), and every now and then Blender crashes. While the cause could be something else, I suspect the Viewport Preview is involved and pausing the preview seems to help.

What if Blender could detect other running Blender instances and, with an optional setting enabled, automatically pause or resume Viewport Render Previews depending on which instance is active?

Example workflow:

  • the user works in Blender instance 1 in Rendered Shading.
  • the user switches to Blender instance 2, which is in Solid Shading.
  • the user switches Blender instance 2 to Rendered Shading.
  • Blender detects another open instance where the Viewport Preview is active (instance 1) and pauses it.
  • the user switches back to instance 1 (its preview is paused).
  • Blender resumes the preview in instance 1 and pauses the preview in instance 2
