Feature Request: Add Modifier to Merge Vertices

It would be nice to have a separate modifier with the sole purpose of merging vertices. Example: I have a cylinder with multiple modifiers (bend/twist/etc) which results in a donut shape. The touching verts need to merge together to be able to get a seamless render. Uptil now I need to apply all modifiers and do a remove doubles.. A quick demonstration image is attached.

Ps. ofcourse a merge verts option in the simple deform is also accepted, but then again.. there are other modifiers which can result in verts lining up perfectly and in need of merging.

I often wish I had a "weld" modifier to remove doubles between different parts of a character or clothing. Sometimes it's hard to keep it all together when it's rigged.

There's a custom build with a Weld modifier. If it's going to be accepted by Blender devs is a whole other story.

This would likely come with everything nodes I feel. So perhaps its on the horizon.

@daniellapalme: regardless, it would need to be made into a modifier, and compared to a lot of other modifiers, I imagine it would be simple to code, though I do envision it would tax computers by going vertex by vertex. perhaps there should also be a checkbox to only connect non-manifold edges.
