Integrating an Advanced Modeling Tools Plugin into Blender by Default

Proposal: Integrating an Advanced Modeling Tools Plugin into Blender by Default

Introduction

Blender's default toolset is powerful, but many essential modeling tools that enhance productivity and streamline workflows are currently missing or require third-party add-ons. Many users rely on external modeling tool plugins , but integrating an official, optimized modeling tools plugin by default would significantly improve the out-of-the-box modeling experience.

This proposal suggests adding a dedicated Modeling Tools plugin as a built-in feature in Blender, similar to how Sculpting, Texture Painting, and Geometry Nodes are natively integrated.

Core Features of the Proposed Modeling Tools Plugin

  1. Advanced Selection and Manipulation Tools

    • Inset with Grid Support – Improved inset tool with an optional grid snapping mode for precise control.
    • Loop Tools (by Default) – Add the Bridge, Space, Circle, and Relax functions directly into Blender’s modeling toolset.
    • Advanced Bevel Improvements – A more robust Bevel tool with better boolean support and consistent width maintenance.
  2. Interactive Deformation Tools

    • FFD (Free-Form Deformation) Modifier – As proposed earlier, a cage-based deformation system similar to 3ds Max’s FFD.
    • Lattice Enhancements – Improved usability of the Lattice Modifier , with auto-generated lattice bounds.
    • Soft Selection with Falloff Visualization – More precise proportional editing controls with visual feedback on falloff effects.
  3. Boolean and Hard Surface Modeling Tools

    • Auto-Cleanup Boolean Artifacts – A modifier or tool that automatically detects and cleans up messy boolean intersections .
    • Non-Destructive Boolean Workflow – Improved workflow similar to Hard Ops and BoxCutter , but natively integrated.
    • Edge Flow Preservation – A tool that automatically maintains clean edge topology after boolean operations.
  4. Mesh Cleanup and Retopology Enhancements

    • Auto-Quad Remesher – A built-in remeshing tool for clean quad-based topology .
    • Recalculate Edge Flow – A function that optimizes edge loops after topology changes .
    • Select and Fix Non-Manifold Geometry – A dedicated tool for detecting and repairing non-manifold geometry in one click.
  5. Precision and Hard-Surface Modeling Tools

    • Interactive Edge Creasing – Improved crease workflows for Subdivision Modeling .
    • Snap-to-Grid System Overhaul – A more intuitive snapping system that dynamically adjusts to the object scale and scene settings.
    • Enhanced Measurement Tools – More precise ruler and annotation tools for CAD-like workflows.

Why This Plugin Should Be Built into Blender

  • Improves Blender’s Base Modeling Capabilities – Reduces the need for external plugins and workarounds.
  • Enhances Workflow Speed – Native tools reduce reliance on manual adjustments and provide faster results.
  • Non-Destructive and Flexible – Integrating these tools as modifiers and operators allows for more procedural modeling workflows.
  • Supports Both Beginners and Professionals – A user-friendly yet feature-complete modeling toolkit would help newcomers and experienced artists alike.
  • Aligns with Industry Standards – Many of these tools exist in 3ds Max, Maya, and Houdini , making Blender more accessible to users transitioning from other software.
