Bevel modifier should be smarter with vertexes

Combining curved surfaces, Boolean modifiers and Bevel modifier results in ugly artifacts because Bevel modifier doesn't check if the nearby vertex stays within the bevel. The current code blindly assumes that the direction of the edge is enough to decide the resulting geometry for the bevel. This actually works other than the existing edge should either intersect and float to beveled edge or the existing verted should be slided until it's outside the beveled area. I think the resulting object quality would be better if the bevel created extra geometry to allow correct curve.

See example of the problems and the manual workaround after applying the modifier here: youtu.be/099W_dBLiEs

It's obvious that technically Blender has all the info required to correctly emit the output without artifacts so this is only limitation of the current Bevel modifier.

I (the main bevel developer) intend to fix this as my next big project in Blender. It is much harder to do than it might seem, which is why it hasn't been done so far. I expect it might take six months of work.

Great! Do you have an estimate about when the improved bevel modifier might be available?

Great new tricks....thx

If you haven't seen this, try unboxing the Geometry - "Clamp Overlap" option from the Bevel modifier and adjust Offset Amount.
