Delete selected item using the backspace key in windows.

Out of the box, can you allow us to delete selected faces, edges or vertices using the backspace key in edit mode as it does nothing now? I just want to be able to easily delete selected stuff when modeling. Or is the backspace key used for something else in Blender I don't know about? Even if I press delete in edit mode nothing happens. I'm not sure what is happening. Can I only remove things using the popup menu?

I don't understand what you're talking about exactly. So I'll try to answer what I do understand.

You get a huge popup because you have all three components selected (vertices, edges and faces). You can use the "x" hotkey for a smaller popup, but you can't get ride of it since Blender can't know what do you want to delete exactly. The solution here would be custom shortcuts.

Actually, in the object mode, you can use the "delete" key if you don't want the popup to appear. Or, in the preference > Keymap, you can search for "delete" and under the "Object Mode" panel > shortcut "x", you can uncheck the "confirm" option which will kill the confirmation popup.

Thank you for your detailed answer Shimoon.

I mean if I'm in edit mode and use the select box Blender knows what is selected. If I press delete or backspace the selected items aren't deleted. The menu is very useful if I just want to delete something specifically so not changing the menu. If you select something and press delete or backspace that item should be removed. I think it should be the standard way of programs working. Select > Delete. I'm new to Blender but I can't understand why I need to go into the settings and set a way for the delete or backspace key to work. Are they used to do something else?

I updated the idea above to try and make it clearer.

Yeah it may be a bit unintuitive if you're coming from another package. Blender have a few ways to delete each selected component, so how could it know what you have in mind when you select something? For example : if you select a vertex, you can either simply delete it but you can also dissolve it. When you're selecting a few faces, you can delete them but also dissolve them or conserve the edges and vertices (even if it's clearly not something you're using everyday I know :p)

My solution here would be to use shortcuts (like Ctrl + x to dissolve a selection) but not everyone are supportive of such way to work.

I agree that Blender could try to be a bit more intelligent. Like the default behavior could be the basic brute force deletion of the selected component and if you're looking for a bit more refined option you could look into the popup, I guess that could be a solution.

Personally, I have assigned the "delete" key to each basic component deletion so even in edit mode I don't have the popup.

I find blender is slow to delete things from the menus so I use the cl eraser addon. I have to draw cubes then delete lots to get the shapes I want in 3d. It wastes so much time going through the popup in vanilla blender but sometimes it's useful. But I also agree blender should fix the delete code. Like you said Shamoon a more intelligent delete would be good the brute force option only for a delete key makes sense. It is free so I guess I can't complain but it should be made easier to use for everyone. If we chose the selection mode in blender it knows what we are selecting at the top left of the screen. Shift to select multiples. And the new selection tool is great. X on the keyboard can be for the popup to delete by choice and delete can just delete the selected things. That's heaps faster. Then I don't need cl eraser but cl eraser should be built in as it's easy to understand it deletes. Blender takes so much setup and people are so against blender being updated to be better but I can't see for what reason. Shouldn't we all be open to making programs easier to use. If there was a new base set of cad line tools it would make blender easier to use. I came from autocad but moved to blender as it was free.

Shamoon, I will setup my blender like yours. The setting for deleting without a popup is nice. One key instead of 2 every time is nice and I hope this can be the default of blender. But people can modify it if they don't like it as well. Blender is nice as we can change so many settings and they always move from install to install but not from PC to PC which is sad.

You can just change it in the Keymap tab in the preferences Not really a feedback request

The keymap settings are a bit difficult to use. As I set the key but still nothing is happening.

I updated the post up the top. Sorry if the first submitted idea wasn't clear. I'm a beginner in Blender but I'm finding it difficult to do basic stuff. It would be great if we didn't have to find settings to use it easily out of the box.

My feedback is just it would be great if after drawing something if I could go into Edit Mode and then could use the selection box tool to select things, after that when I pressed delete or backspace on the keyboard remove items (the lines, faces or vertices) selected.

so set a hotkey for it? I don't see why your personal preference needs to be adopted by everyone on the planet when it's something you could easily change yourself

Do I have to set both the delete key and backspace key in the settings to delete selected items selected with the selection box in edit mode? Sorry if it's a basic question I'm just a beginner here. I've been doing 3D work in other programs for about 30 years though. I can see Object Mode in the 3D view for the keymap but not Edit Mode. And if I search for delete that doesn't show the edit mode delete key-binding.
