Support additional audio/video formats

I am not sure if Blender could support ffmpeg or another media framework out of the box but certainly some formats are not supported yet.

Specifically I am missing Opus Audio support currently. Opus has grown quite mature and really can act as a replacement for AAC/HE-AAC as well as Ogg Vorbis and MP3.

Opus would be helpful in the video editor to import Opus tracks as well as an output filter. Due to it's license it would be a perfect companion for Blender.

Blender already uses FFMPEG for most (all?) of its audio and video encoding. The difficulty is exposing those features in Blender's UI. Right now, the encoding panel is a bit of a mess and it's a nontrivial challenge to include everything in there that FFMPEG supports.

For this proposal to be really useful, it would be nice to include mock-ups of how the encoding panel could be improved to accommodate Opus as well as other codecs and features that are built into FFMPEG.

Thanks and very good point. In fact I am first looking for possiblity to add Opus audio to the video timeline in video editor. When I import an MKV container containing H.265 video and Opus audio Blender keeps ignoring the audio track entirely. So I thought it's perhaps not supporting Opus at all. However if ffmpeg is used Opus should be supported.

It would be supplementary for me to be able to render a video with H.265 and Opus audio. However pretty nice. The dialog would look pretty much the same as the H.264 dialog where mainly the bitrate would have to be selected or even better than bitrate I would recommend to specify the CRF factor with a default of 20 to produce very good results. For Opus I would recommend to allow users just to specify the bitrate and keep the compression_level at 10 as processing power required is totally minor.

So the request would be:

  • Fix video editor to import opus audio tracks

Optionally:

  • Add H.265 option to video render output options with one option: CRF (defaulting to 20)
  • Add Opus audio option to video render output options with bitrate option (defaulting to 128k perhaps) and hard-coded compression_level 10 and vbr encoding on

In fact I also always hated in Blender to be required to specify a bitrate in H.264 encoding while you get much better results using CRF specification rather than target bitrate.
