Blend file suggestion to use OPC - for source control reasons.
I wanted to suggest a project to use Open Packaging Conventions for the blend file format. This would allow one to unzip the blend file, then source control it, and maintain diffs to the extracted files in source control. To get a file out of source control, you'd get latest, then would re-zip into blend locally. Just a thought for source control management.

Blend files are almost just memory dumps of Blender's working memory -- they're full of pointer addresses that vary every time the file is saved. Since the .blend file keeps so many pointers to different parts of the data, each datablock isn't individually editable in the file (since that would invalidate the pointers).
There's been some talk in the undo-improvement topics about using UUIDs to track stuff instead of pointers, but I doubt they'd change the .blend file structure even still.
