Remesh modifier with voxels should work on nonclosed models (I proved it is possible).

I use the Remesh (voxels) modifier a lot and would get frustrated that the geometry had to be closed. When you remesh a nonclosed model, the result in Blender is basically garbage. There isn't a warning about what has happened. You just get a useless mess out of it. So I took a look at the C++ code and saw how OpenVDB was being used. I read enough OpenVDB and just enough Blender code to change the Remesh modifier to set the signed distance in the level set for each voxel created by OpenVDB. It uses the polygon normals to determine positive versus negative signed distances. It works great but it depends on outside code that Blender wouldn't necessarily want to integrate just for this change. So my questions:

  1. Why doesn't the existing Remesh (Voxel) modifier work for nonclosed (non-manifold?) models? It wasn't hard to do. Was this a design decision based on other parts of Blender that I don't understand?
  2. If people are interested in this functionality, how do I integrate it in a way that Blender would want? I have decades of C++ experience but hardly any Python.

Hi Scott,

I think that is a fantastic idea !

I'm doing a project with imported 3D Google Map mesh.

Imported mesh are ''garbage'' (see picture), like really garbage..

What I would love to do would be to remesh it Then I would use Quadremesher to get a good topology out of it, to make basic texturing and modif the mesh.

As you said, because the mesh is non-manifold, then the remesh modifier failed.

It would be really cool if we could remesh those garbage mesh !

So I 100 % support that proposal.

I would encourage you to ask on Blender Chat

Then, depending on feedback from a few devs.

Make a PR with obvious advantage of modifying the remesh modifier, and a few picture of where it can failed vs your PR.

Personally I would love to see the Remesh modifier use the same voxel remesh we have in Sculpt Mode. Though maybe it's already planned, or there are some caveats. I don't know.

I advise you to visit devtalk.blender.org if you want to open a discussion with developers, RCS is more for the community to make and discuss feature proposals.
You should also visit the project page , that's the best place to see current development plans, you could search there to seek answers to your questions.

If you want to contribute to Blender, there's some documentation to do so:
