Any updates on Mipmapping or equivalent solutions?

Hello! I am really struggling with trying to fit my large projects onto my GPUs when rendering Cycles (4090s). Are there any plans to get .tx files working in Blender for the GPU? I know that's probably a big undertaking so if that's not possible I thought of an alternative option... What about some type of texture limiter system like the simplify checkbox but instead of limiting the entire scene you could point it to certain collections to limit only? This would at least allow you to potentially set the holdout and indirect objects to a lower resolution therefore allowing you to render high quality production assets like characters. I mean of course you can separate those passes already but you would not get the correct bounce lighting/shadows etc. I've used the memsaver addon for the last two years but it tends to be difficult to use with hard linked collections.

The Cycles texture cache/mipmaps issue got edits (i.e. more concrete "plan" compared to what it was before) just a few days ago projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/68917

Okay this looks great! Looking forward to this. Thanks for showing me this link.

FYI Mipmapping itself does not save vram (it actualy increases), lowering resolutions does.
